Anarchy on the hip-hop and pop charts and thrilling new energy in the EDM and indie-rock underground meant picking the best songs amidst all this wasn't easy. But it was fun. As ever, has been a big year for hip hop with releases from Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Lil Wayne and J Cole to name a few showing the music world how it's done. It's not been easy, but we've picked the 20 tracks we'll still be loving when hits. It was accompanied by possibly the most talked about music video of , but it didn't take Kim Kardashian for 'Bound 2' to get the music world's attention. The song was a runaway hit and it's still a favourite. Following on from their blow away debut with 'Thrift Shop,' Macklemore and Ryan Lewis came back with a second banger.

I am a big fan of gangsta rap and maybe an even bigger fan of action movies. By now I should be wholly desensitized to them. What really gets under my skin is the prevailing calm with which the song is executed. This song unspools with similar chilling tranquility of temperament. The beat is creeping, languid and unhurried. There is no urgency in the delivery of the lyrics, nor is there any sense that the author is in any way perturbed or conversely, excited by his actions.
